Reviews of MerryDay Tarot
"I have
recently become the owner of the MerryDay Tarot by Louisa Poole. I am
ecstatic."
-- Michelle
Review published in the Summer 1999 issue
of Tarot Newsletter by a woman named Mary Greer (who is known in
tarot circles):
"I am excited about this deck. Privately published and not available in
most bookstores, it's a bit on the expensive side (full-color decks are
costly to produce), but worth it if you are a collector. For readers, I
find it a usable deck if you like faeries and dragons and unicorns, and
decks influenced by Waite-Smith. But this is not just a clone-in-new
clothing. Louisa Poole has created an enchanted realm of fantasy and
adventure. It's easy to imagine stepping into the magical landscapes and
rooms where strange creatures fly through the air or elves cavort in the
woods. About half of the Majors are renamed, and a few of them are
drastically re-configured, like the Time Lord for Temperance. It consists
of a gigantic, fierce face with a rainbow forehead and green lips, and
images of the four elements and four times of day. Electrical energy
shoots between two cups. The Mentor (5) reminds me of the Keebler elf who
is telling wisdom stories to two children. The Chariot has become the
Student, looking like a young bearded hippie in a room full of esoteric
paraphernalia, maps, diagrams, books, and charts. I could get lost in that
room!
The deck's colors are bright and cheerful, with lots of misty blue and
purple skies and black borders. The Minor Arcana are multi-cultural: Wands
are African and Fire, Cups are Native American and Water, Swords are
Oriental and Air, Pentacles are Scandinavian and Earth. Instead of Aces
there are elemental Dragons for each suit -- real images of power. The
Courts are also reconceptualized. For instance, in the suit of Wands there
is a King of Fire, Queen of Wands, Summer Warrior and Elemental (Unicorn
for Fire, Mermaid for Water, Pegasus for Air, and Centaur/Satyr for
Earth). Each card is numbered (0/22 through 78), with short printed
meanings that are essential since there is only an info card that basically
repeats what is on the cards themselves. The deck is as long and slightly
wider than the Rider-Waite.
I could go on and on describing the Minor Arcana. Although they are
RWS-like they also have fabulous new elements. The 7 of Cups , for
instance, shows an American Indian man gazing full-face at pottery bowls
with sacred images emerging from them. The accompanying words "Dream
Weaver" give the sense that this vision carries much responsibility. In
fact, the next card, 8 of Cups, shows a brave on horseback on a seashore at
night and is called "New Direction," as if the vision is now taking him to
unknown places. Don't get this deck if you're looking for esoteric dogma
or historical reproductions! This is a fun, cheerful, and uplifting deck
that sparks creativity and cries out for you to play and use your imagination."

From another review, by Alison
Cuff:
Break free of tradition, look beyond, journey above the ordinary and expand
your views of our global village. The MerryDay Tarot is a refreshing,
fantastic voyage of imagery encompassing all ethnic races, dissolving all
traditional religions and restoring the days of old when humans, giants,
unicorns, dragons and other fantastic creatures lived side by side. Louisa
Poole has created a deck where we walk with this magical world, learning
the lessons of life as they are meant to be experienced. There are no
secrets to decode, no organized religion , no specific initiation, no
barriers of class, gender, and experience. Numerology, the study of
numbers and their magical correlations appear on every card, in their
original and simple form. Keywords also appear on each card to open the
door to imagination and the potential in each individual. Astrological
correlations are grouped in regards to the four seasons. Swords herald in
Spring and the qualities of mind, through, reason and knowledge,
representing the zodiac signs of Aries, Taurus and Gemini. The association
of communication and truth relfect the season of Spring when all is
new. Gardens and beings alike begin their journey from seed to
maturity. Minds are renewed from their winter hibernation and ready to
take up their sword, marching into a brave new world. One can see and hear
with the eyes and ears of the inner child, eagerly learning the way of
Pegasus, the faeries and slyph. As Spring turns to Summer all creation
grasps the wand of inspiration and imagination, creating that spark that
ignites al possibilities. Cancer, Leo and Virgo wave their Magic wands of
water, fire and earth energies calling forth the dragons, angels,
salamanders and unicorns. Creatures of such inspiration and awe awakening
each and every spirit to act on their inspiration ... bring them forth ...
dare to dream.
The last paragraph is:
There is no hidden knowledge, no secret, no boundaries where only those who
supposedly "know" may enter. It is time to embrace imagination,
inspiration, dreams and new ways of being unique. This deck gives everyone
the opportunity to master its contents. Words, numbers and symbols are
meant to make it easier to trigger your thought process. This is a new,
unique, all-encompassing, beautiful and most of all, so uplifting one feels
they are transported to magical places each time they use this deck.
"Marsha Sheldon and I started "Touchstone Seminars" this year which has
groups in Los Angeles, and Orange Counties. The groups meet three times a
year and the focus is the care and feeding of the Soul. I have just used your
deck our Sept 15-18 workshop. We found the cards deeply stirring and very
useful to the participants. WE will use the deck again in our October group.
We don't yet have our resale license but will shortly ... I have requests for 10 decks from the
12 participants in this last workshop. Marsha and I will buy another 10 to
20 decks for future use. We would like to help support your efforts in
getting the deck out. May you grow as we do."
